AKC - American Kennel Club
AKC stands for the American Kennel Club. It is the oldest registry in the United States for purebred dogs. There are many registration options available for dogs, but the American Kennel Club is well-known as the best and most reputable of all. The top ten breeds of registered dogs include Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Beagles, Poodles, Pomeranians, Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds, and Yorkshire Terriers. Over 150 breeds are eligible for registration.
Registration is not a guarantee or indication of quality because parent dogs and their puppies are not thoroughly inspected to receive registration. However, if adult dogs or puppies do not have the appearance of their registered breed, their registration will be investigated and may be revoked. Registration is simply a record of dogs that are of pure breed. Dog buyers will have to determine on their own whether or not puppies are likely to be in good health.
About the AKC
The American Kennel Club was founded in 1884. It is the principal U.S. registry of purebred dogs and the leading regulatory agency for dog shows in the United States. The AKC records statistics about particular dogs, such as the dog's name, sex, color, breed, parentage, date of birth, breeder, and owner. It also records any titles that dogs have won in shows, performance trials, or obedience trials sanctioned by the American Kennel Club.
Standards are set for each breed registered in the American Kennel Club. Standards include a description of the "ideal" appearance of each dog breed. The American Kennel Club published the Complete Dog Book so that these standards can be recognized by breeders, buyers, dog show judges, and potential dog owners. All buyers who purchase registered dogs should receive a certificate of registration from sellers.

Chocolate and Your Dogs Health - What you should Know
By: Carolyn Schweitzer
Who can resist Chocolates for Valentine's Day? Your dog’s health depends on it! (Resisting, that is). We humans get to indulge because most of us know when to stop. But your dog won't quit after just a few. Give her a chance and she'll down the whole box of Godivas in one gulp. So on Valentine's Day, you're actually being kind to your best buddy if you eat all the chocolates yourself!
Why is chocolate harmful to a dogs health?
Chocolate, as you know, is made with cocoa beans. And cocoa beans contain methylxanthine alkaloids in the form of theobromine and caffeinea, which are toxic to dogs. Chocolate can also contain high amounts of fat which can put your dogs health in jeopardy as well.
How Much is Too Much?
Though it's certain that dogs and chocolate don't mix, different dogs react differently to the methylxanthines. And reactions can vary according to the age, size and overall health of the dog. The smaller the dog the smaller the dose needed to produce an effect.
And of course, if your dog's health is already weakened by other medical conditions, he's more susceptible. The same holds for older dogs..
Theobromine is present in differing amounts in different kinds of chocolate:
•White chocolate 1mg/oz
•Hot chocolate 12 mg /oz
•Milk chocolate 44-66 mg/oz
•Semi-sweet chocolate 260 mg/oz
•Dark chocolate 450 mg/oz (wow!)
•Baking/bitter chocolate or cocoa powder varies as much as 150-600 mg/oz.
How much chocolate can a dog eat and survive?
That depends in part on her weight.
Under 200 mg theobromine per kg body weight (91mg per lb) has not been observed to be fatal. A potentially lethal dose in a 16 pound dog is only one pound of milk chocolate. Only two ounces of baking chocolate can cause serious problems in a 10-pound dog. People stop eating chocolate before getting to toxic levels, but dogs don't!
What are the warning signs of a problem?
Any dog that’s eaten chocolate should be watched closely for symptoms, particularly smaller dogs, "seniors", and dogs with health problems. Symptoms may range from vomiting and diarrhea to panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death in severe cases.
While white chocolate may not be as likely to cause a methylxanthine poisoning, the high fat content of lighter chocolates could still lead to vomiting and diarrhea, and possibly the development of life-threatening pancreatitis. Too much fatty food will also affect a dog’s health in the same way it does ours, by packing on the pounds!
What can be done once chocolate is ingested?
Make note of the type of chocolate ingested and how much was eaten, if possible.
Theobromine will stay in the bloodstream between 14 and 20 hours. Within two hours of ingestion, try inducing vomiting unless your dog is over stimulated, comatose, or has lost the gag reflex.
If your dog has eaten a considerable amount of chocolate, or displays any of the above symptoms, take her to the vet right away. If her symptoms are minor, make her eat activated charcoal. The unabsorbed theobromine binds to it and be passed out of the system. (In a pinch, burnt - as in thoroughly blackened - toast will do.)
Are there any other products I should worry about?
Yes -- Cocoa Mulch!!
No, it's not chocolate, but the two products have something in common. They're both derived from the cocoa bean, and they're both hazardous to your dogs health.
Cocoa bean shells are a by-product of chocolate production and are popular as mulch for landscaping. Homeowners like the attractive color and scent, and the fact that the mulch breaks down into an organic fertilizer.
Some dogs are attracted to cocoa mulch, and will eat it in varying quantities. The coca bean shells can contain from 0.2% to 3% theobromine (the toxin) as compared to 1-4% in unprocessed beans.
Eating cocoa mulch has four possible outcomes. The most common is vomiting, in 50% of cases. Next most common, in 33% of cases, is tremors (shaking). And 17% end up with tachycardia (rapid heart rate), hyperactivity or diarrhea. The fourth outcome is no effect on the dogs health at all, and this is the result in 33% of cases.
Although only 16 cases were reported in approximately one year (the duration of the study), reports are on the increase. California accounts for about 2/3 of cases reported so far. Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities, and getting your friend to the vet promptly will assure a happy outcome.
What's the Bottom Line?
Thanks to a more educated public, fewer fatalities from foods like chocolate are being reported these days.
Still, it pays to keep up with what's currently known about various foods and their effects on a dogs health and well being. Grapes and cocoa mulch, for example, were discovered only recently to have harmful effects.
If your dog’s health is important to you (and I'm betting it is!), then keep him away from the chocolates on Valentine's Day and other holidays as well. And watch out year round for products made from the cocoa bean.
In an emergency, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.

I think people often overlook the importance of grooming their pets as a way to contribute to their overall good health. Here are just a few more tips on pet grooming. You must groom your pets whole body including the legs, tail, and underbody if you want to do it right.
You must groom certain pets from the skin outward to truly be effective in taking care of their coat of hair and keeping it healthy. Comb through the unseen healthy hair and remove the shedding hair; this is what most groomers do first before cutting your pet's coat. You must groom some animals all at once while some other animals have so much hair that it is esier to do a little at a time each day. You know your pet is well mannerd when it will sit still and alow you or a professional to perform regular grooming and maintenence without any fuss. If you feel you just don't have the time or desire to do it yourself, its time to call the professionals. Your dog will love you for it, and you'll feel great about it too. Hope this was helpful.

Press Release Sponsored By BreedersUSA
BreedersUSA January 2008
Breeder of the Month
Moreno Valley CA. January 1, 2008-BreedersUSA is proud to announce that Lucene Kennels as BreedersUSA’s January 2008 Breeders of the Month. The mother, daughter team of Jeanine Sudinski and Mechelle Sudinski-Stall is recognized for their outstanding leadership, devotion, and support to the Dachshund and Rottweiler community World Wide.
Jeanine and have been World-Class Breeder, Conformation Handlers and Trainers for many different breeds for nearly 55 years. They have been blessed to have loved, owned, shown, trained and produced some of "THE LEGENDS OF THEIR BREEDS."
Jeanine Sudinski attended her first dog show at the Chicago Sportsman's Pier at the tender age of 18. Jeanine watched a man and his handler discuss what he wanted done with the dogs with great interest.
When the excitement of the show was over Jeanine introduced herself and told the team how beautiful their dogs were. This is where Jeanine knew she would someday be a Great Showman of the dachshund breed.
Jeanine’s interest in Dachshunds resurfaced again in 1952 when working with a dog trainer and dachshund team on a TV commercial. Jeanine became a serious student of the breed, learning from legendary dachshund breeders; Grace Greenburg, Ed Hirshman, and Fred and Rose Heying.
After considerable research Jeanine bought her first Standard Smooth Dachshund. Jeanine applied the lessons of her mentors, and developed many champions and Best in Show winners that borne her "Lucene" kennel name.
Jeanine's leadership in the Dachshund community continued and she received her AKC judge’s license 1972. Jeanine's her first judging assignment was in the Northern California Dachshund Club specialty in 1973 where she judged 167 Dachshunds.
Many years of dedicated service to the Dachshunds community have passed and in 1996 Jeanine was honored to be the AKC Judge assigned to oversee the 4th Annual Dachshund Specialty in Melbourne, Australia; where she judged 538 of the best dachshunds in the world.
Jeanine's love for dogs was inherited by her daughter, Mechelle Sudinski-Stall. Mechelle started showing the Lucene Dachshunds in 1980, in her first show she placing in the Hound Group with Ch. Lucene’s Daily Double, and continued winning through the next 27 years. Jeanine and Mechelle have finished many champions of record as well as having the number one brood bitch in 2004.
Working together as a team, they have recorded unparallel wins in the Dachshund community. With all the Dachshund history who would think that Mechelle would have time for another breed. However Mechelle’s first love was a puppy Rottweiler at the age of 11. Mechelle’s Rottweiler became an odd addition to the dachshund family.
Mechelle’s Rottweiler “Lucene’s Rhoda of Rajamul, UD went on to complete her Utility Obedience Title in 1979.
“I would like to say that I feel very fortunate to have been around and seen the great dogs... I have seen, visited and been taught by many wonderful Dachshund breeders and owners of the historic Dachshund Kennels. In the last 55 plus years I have worked with the Dachshund community; I truly believe it was my privilege to be around so much excellence”. Jeanine Sudinski, Lucene Kennels
We are honored to be BreedersUSA’s January 2008 Breeder of the Month and we look forward meeting all of you in 2008.” Mechelle Sudinski-Stall, Lucene Kennels.
